Love, in all its forms, is the subject of my work.
Love is full of arduous tasks that never have a certain end. Through video, sound, print, sculpture, and writing, my work tells humorous, but often sad stories of love. By playing either the narrator or protagonist I create narratives that emerge from exaggerated personal experience, and fairytales that havent come true. I am just as much the creator as I am part of my work.
My most recent body of work, "Will You Lie With Me Forever" incorporates a combination of video, photography, and print. This work is meant to address what happens when people settle for something that isnt real. Sometimes when we try to heal a broken heart with a new lover, we end up lying to ourselves and to the other. Tom and Mary, the couple, find themselves lying with each other and to each other. Their love is real in action but not in thought or in essence. They want so badly to find a happiness that isnt theirs by going through the actions of a happy couple. No matter where they go, or what they do, they wont find love within each other. The love they share will never be the kind of love they hoped for because they can never be completely honest with each other.
"Will You Lie With Me Forever" includes a game where the participants try to help the couple, Tom and Mary, find a place where they belong together. The game is made up of a video of constantly changing locations, and a window decal of the couple lying naked. The couple and their clothing cling to the video monitor via static - people are invited to change the couples clothing as the setting changes. Originally there were also 200 mono-prints of the couple lying in different settings (from National Geographic Magazine) but the prints have since been lost. This digital version is the only evidence left of Tom and Marys search for their true home.
